Calibration Services

I offer comprehensive calibration services for the print and photographic workflow.

As a certified Color Management Professional, I am trained in ensuring that what you see on your screen and in your print is accurate. If your images don’t look right when you send them to others, or if your prints don’t match your monitor, I would love to help.

Monitor Calibration

Monitors are your first, best window onto your work. Variations in its color, brightness, or contrast can dramatically affect your final product, whether you are preparing images for digital or print presentation.

I calibrate to ISO 12646:2015. This is the international standard that governs “the characteristics of displays to be used for soft proofing of colour images”; essentially, it means that your display will be tuned to the same reference standard used by other photographers and printers around the world.

Monitor calibration ensures that you will know that your monitor is not the problem* if your print is not to your liking. It is the first step toward being able to predict what your final print will look like in advance, and will allow you to communicate your expectations to printers with confidence.

Calibration services are priced at $99 per monitor calibrated.

*For best results, use a wide-gamut monitor. Recommendations available upon request.

Paper Profiling

Every paper renders color differently. Some are warmer, some are cooler; some are matte, others are glossy. And every paper is affected by the printer it is paired with. Even if you have two of the same type of printer, each of them might print slightly differently. Knowing how your printer prints on different papers will help you save time, paper, and ink.

I utilize a spectrophotometer—a device that measures the wavelength of light—to create an ICC Profile specific to your combination of print and paper. This means you will be able to preview, with reasonable accuracy, how your print will look before you print it. Instead of making multiple prints while tweaking contrast, saturation, or brightness, you can make your editing decisions while previewing the printed result.

Custom profiles also have an advantage over manufacturer-created profiles. Manufacturer profiles are designed for a specific model of printer, but include allowance for variations in manufacturing. A custom profile is designed for your printer, and typically allows darker blacks and more saturated colors. All profiles are prepared to the ISO/TS 10128:2023 standard.

Paper profiling is priced at $99 per paper profiled.

Other Details

Calibration and profiling requires access to the computer, monitor, and printer you intend to use, as well as at least 4 Letter (8.5 x 11") sized sheets of paper of each type that you would like to profile.

During the profiling process, I typically cover ‘soft-proofing’ in Photoshop and Lightroom, advanced computer and printer settings, and ways to put your calibrations and profiles to their best use. If you would like more information, such as comparisons of different paper types, or the features of either Epson Print Layout or Canon Professional Print and Layout, additional time is billed at $99/hr.
