artist statement.
I started as a writer of fantasy and science fiction, and the urge to build new worlds has stayed with me. Now I build worlds out of light—and for this, a camera is the best tool available.
I use a bare camera sensor and manipulate light by hand, using mirrors, glass, and found objects. The results are abstract forms that emerge from darkness like the Big Bang, or spaces of color so vivid that the eye cannot interpret them.
Traditional photographs are collaborations between photographers and their subjects. The photographer plays a critical role, but without a subject, a photograph cannot exist. I want to make photographs with no subject at all—to create something from nothing.
