I have never seen the aurora borealis in person. But even through photos and recordings, it consistently inspires in me a sense of awe. Understanding the physics behind it does nothing to lessen its effect; if anything, knowing makes the awe greater.
Aurorals are small experiments inspired by the aurora itself, made by exposing bare sensors to light sources at extreme angles. Processing uncovers faint, indirect traces of light, and familiar shades of green, blue, and purple. Though incomparable to the original, their creation is grounded in similar physical principles.
