about.

Nathaniel Morrow (b. 1992) is an artist and photographer based in New York.

Working primarily without lenses, Morrow uses his hands and a bare camera sensor to produce shapes from raw light. Informed by his training as a writer, his projects explore the nature of creation and the creative act, and the limits of digital processes.

Morrow also works for Planned Parenthood Federation of America as a printer and photographer, and as a teaching assistant at the International Center of Photography. He lives in Brooklyn with his three partners.

About + Contact - nathaniel morrow.

A photograph is a collaboration between a photographer and a subject. The photographer plays a critical role, but the photograph would not exist without a subject. I wanted to make photographs with no subject at all.

My work is intended to be as close as possible to a pure act of creation—making something from nothing. I use a technique I call 'bare-sensor photography', removing the lens from the camera and shaping the light using my hands. Instead of images, the process produces vivid gradients, shapes, and forms from raw light. I use post-processing to adjust details such as color and sharpness, but the light itself is original.
