underfoot.

Humanity leaves itself behind everywhere, especially on the sidewalk. Litter, stains, cracks, scratches, dirt. The fact that it was built at all is a record of human passage. We walk over thousands of details every day, each one traceable to some distant origin.

Paths and roads are also a record of a city’s character, and its priorities. Some are clean and smooth, others broken and littered with trash. This too is an accumulation of small choices, from residents to elected officials.

This series is an invitation to curiosity. Who were the people that left these traces? Who poured the concrete, and who placed their foot in it before it set? Who cracked the road, and who ordered it repaired? And why are things this way, and not some other way?
